Car enthusiasts don’t usually like kit cars. The kit car business has been ruined by all those Fiero-based Ferrari and Miata-based BMW Z3 and eventually died (almost). Car enthusiast supremo Bob Lutz just kinda reinvented the genre with VLF, a company that specialize in the conversion of failed vehicles such as the Fisker Karma and the Dodge Viper. The plan is simple, you take the original car, bump the power and sell it for twice the original price. The VLF Force 1 V10 can hardly fail.
What other kit car was actually great ?

Surely the Baja Bug and Meyers Manx are among the better ones out there. Further, the Factory Five Cobra. The ur-kit car and probably the best, though, is the Seven.

At the moment I’m really lusting over a Beck Spyder with a 2.5L Scoobi mill.

That said, this 8C is probably the coolest recreation ever and I am deeply, deeply in lust with it:

If we’re talking sheer success or impact, Meyer’s manx dunebuggy:
The best kit cars don’t try to imitate anything.
The Caterham 7 would also be right up there I think.

Shelby kit car. Can have a fun weekend ride for mid $20,000 that looks damn close to the $2,000,000 car it copies

agreed

Sand rails. You want a cheap, fun car that can go quickly on and off the road, turns more heads than a Ferrari, gets decent gas mileage, and is titled as a VW Beetle? There’s only one option for you.

VW Beetle to MG kit cars:
In one swoop you’ve pitched VW enthusiasts against MG enthusiasts and ended up with a car that’s noisier, slower and less reliable than either of the originals.

That’s a LeMans spec race car though. Nissan was copying them.

The Michalak C7. While most people will assume that this kit car is based on a smart roadster, it isn’t. The donor car is actually a first generation smart fortwo.
So this:

I like the idea of an 818 though I feel like if I’m at that point in the future I might just want to import one of those mid engined kei cars and busa swap...

Sometimes I hate my obsession with Cobras. If I ever got a replica I would end up just thinking about all the little details that aren’t quite right. There are replicas out there that are pretty much identical to the originals, but they’re like $200k. :(

Can’t edit, but whoops - I thought for some reason I should be posting the WORST kit cars! This is NOT one of the best...
